Stranded in Paris and penniless, American showgirl Eve Peabody is drawn into a scheme by millionaire Georges Flammarion to impersonate a Hungarian countess in order to deflect the attention of the handsome philanderer Jacques Picot from Georges' wife, Helene. There’s a free-spirited, manic energy to Midnight that modern films have abandoned.

Midnight is tautly scripted, brilliantly structured, and exquisitely acted.

Midnight is an irreverent screwball rom-com that takes aim at class (an omnipresent Wilder theme) even when you know exactly where it’s going. And it benefits greatly from a marvelously comic turn by Colbert, who was not the first choice for Eve.

A somewhat forgotten screwball comedy classic, combining likably raffish characters with side-splitting dialogue and a snazzy finale.

Starring Colbert and Barrymore, this charming fairytale is one of the best screwball comedies as well as a highlight of Mitchell Leisen's career.
