The story contains just the right amount of complication, heartache, and emotional conflict to motivate its characters without feeling forced.

Somehow, Carney has it both ways with the ending, giving Rick the resolution he doubtless would have in real life – and the graciousness to accept it – while giving the audience what they want as well. I was perversely impressed by that.

And nobody is as perceptive about music’s redemptive impact. In his raw and real explorations, Carney has created authentic characters and original songs that meet the moments.

This one feels like a filmmaker revisiting familiar territory rather than breaking new ground, but it’s still a warmly sincere and enjoyable dramedy about creativity, friendship, and ambition.

Feels like a much funnier cousin to A Star Is Born, mixed with the friendship dynamics and comic energy of I Love You, Man"
