Absolutely not for everyone, but there are so many ideas and inspirations stuffed into this genre gumbo that it’s hard not to admire.

Hot Spot is a hot mess in the worst way. This tedious and often-incoherent sci-fi drama fails in its jumbled concept of a post-apocalyptic world, where resources are scarce and controlled by an A.I. being. The acting and dialogue are horrendous.

Despite some striking imagery, Smoczyńska’s film has an ethos so thrown together that the result feels almost as vacant as the A.I. slop it’s taking down.

There are things in Hot Spot waiting to be explored, but it gets lost in a sea of digital noise, conflicting directions, and no real desire or conviction to take a stand on anything.

One could, at a push, argue for Hot Spot as a nihilistic forecast of a future in which artificial intelligence renders void all human conflict and contrast. If so, Smoczynska’s restless, vigorously witty imagination feels proudly unsuited to that vision.
