There are things in Hot Spot waiting to be explored, but it gets lost in a sea of digital noise, conflicting directions, and no real desire or conviction to take a stand on anything.

One could, at a push, argue for Hot Spot as a nihilistic forecast of a future in which artificial intelligence renders void all human conflict and contrast. If so, Smoczynska’s restless, vigorously witty imagination feels proudly unsuited to that vision.

Hot Spot is trying to say something but it loses interest in its own dystopia.

Unfortunately, Hot Spot is a tepid destination as far as vintage, heavily stylized dystopian narratives go and neither an arresting production design nor an intriguing cast can salvage Smoczynska's scattered and rudimentary rumination...

For all of its visual flair and intriguing ideas, Hot Spot feels like a film that has bitten off more than its narrative can convincingly chew.
