Many elements of a solid thriller are present, including a lawless, unstable setting and credible perils; but the story wanders and drifts, its tension hobbled by Hig’s mopiness.

Scott can still build a lived-in, dangerous future world with texture and beauty. The trouble is that “The Dog Stars” rarely gives us enough reason to care who survives it.
