Perhaps a stronger director might have jazzed things up a bit, but if you take out the musical numbers featuring Astaire you are left with a confounding cinematic mess with Caulfield at the center, an actress who has very little charm...

The films highlight -- by far -- is Astaire's performance of Puttin' on the Ritz."

Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire and Joan Caulfield are the inhabitants of this fictional vacuum, and do their best to blow into it a breath of life. Fortunately, their best is pretty good.
