Miss Holliday is simply wonderful. So much is this the fact that, when the plot does not require her presence -- fortunately, not often -- the film slows down.

The story's unimportant. What's important is Judy Holliday, building out of her own gorgeous talent a character who is exciting, funny, tender and pitiful all at once.

The success of the picture is due to direction (Cukor) that makes one hyperconscious of visual gags and wastes little time authenticating the brassy Kanin play.

Even the outdated, idealistic view of governmental underpinnings and the unlikely leniency of tempestuous thugs can't stop the film from being monumentally appealing.
