Jaded cabaret singer Mademoiselle Amy Jolly falls for Tom Brown, a carefree private in the French Foreign Legion. After Tom overhears wealthy aristocrat Kennington propose to Amy, he accepts a dangerous assignment, convinced that he cannot give the beautiful chanteuse the life she wants. All proves fair in love and war, however, and Amy must decide which man she truly loves.

Thanks to the careful character development, the main personas are exceptionally entertaining, despite the constant sense of ruin that hovers over their every embrace.

One may watch Morocco with pleasure, but not with the intellectual satisfaction one gets from the first viewing (and even the second) of earlier works by von Sternberg.

Despite its pomposity and flamboyant performance from Marlene Dietrich, 'Morocco' is a pre-code melodrama lacking a few lights to illuminate its predictable romance. [Full review in Spanish]

Morocco earned Dietrich what would be the only Best Actress Oscar nomination of her entire career.

One of the star's most demure characterizations as a cabaret singer falling head over heels for an unfaithful Legionnaire. Her songs aren't quite as transfixing in her requisite show numbers here, either.
