Unfortunately, the film spends too much time searching for that version of itself, leaning uncomfortably on a traditional rom-com formula that it never finds a way to subvert.

New Coke, in bowing to Coca-Cola Classic, left everyone wondering why it existed in the first place. The same goes for this terrible movie.

This warm, well-meaning comedy from the makers of Love Actually and Notting Hill adds a Gen Z slant to the tried and tested romcom formula.

Lacking not just in sense but charm and chemistry to boot, this would-be defense of rom-com tropes against our jaded age ends up, instead, far more cynical than any of the criticisms it’s supposedly fighting against.

"Finding Emily" may fizzle out with its final grand gesture, but the journey to get there ultimately wins you over, as the classic rom-coms do.
