The story is a touching one and is convincingly presented.

"Blonde Venus" does two things for Dietrich. It gives her the best story she has ever had, and it provides her with a character to portray that is thoroughly human and deeply emotional.

In endeavoring to turn out another "Madame X" with added theatre atmosphere, [Josef von Sternberg] paid too much attention to his star's spotlight, and too little to continuity.

There's no big emotional build-up, no tingling suspense, no concentrated driving force in the story - and I suppose that's why I was disappointed. As a matter of fact, it's too closely patterned after life itself to be good drama.

This picture gives Miss Dietrich a real down-to-earth story and a character to portray that is worthy of her talent.
