Director Johannes Roberts sticks close to the games, which might please fans, but the film's disparate stories don't mesh, and the script merely offers up clichés and identikit characters.

Add on another star, or perhaps even two, if you're a fan of the games, but Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will struggle to win over those who aren't familiar with the franchise.

This too-faithful adaptation is strictly for game purists as casual fans will find the plot nonsensical and the characters non-existent. It's a shame because the cast is great and the Jennifer Paige's 'Crush' needle drop is inspired.

It's a solidly constructed movie that manages to evoke scares and suspense. That's more than any earlier entry in this screen franchise can say.

Don’t expect any deep and meaningful hidden messages here, instead just sit back and enjoy having your heart rate elevated at every turn.
