New Mexico Territory, 1870s. In the time when the railroads are pushing west through the American West, Susan Bradley (Garland) arrives in a frontier town as a mail-order bride, only to discover that her betrothed is the town drunk. Bradley finds employment at the Harvey House restaurant, bringing beauty, good food and culture to the untamed town--changes opposed by a number of hard-edged local folks.
