Keaton gets better with age, and so do his choices. Quietly, the film is an ode to the ultimate goal of every father: doing what’s necessary won’t happen all the time, but it needs to happen when time is of the essence.

A welcome, character-driven tonic. It’s a small movie more concerned with character and relationship stories than it is with big-budget thrills or epic set pieces. And that’s OK.

The Miles subplot is a little overbaked, as is Marsden’s performance, but overall Keaton and his immersion into a character in transition drive the film confidently.

The tortured morality at the center of the film renders it prickly and fascinating.

Keaton is ever watchable, however variable the movie.
