As she's being mugged in Central Park, Elsa Bannister (Rita Hayworth) is saved by itinerant Irishman, Mike O'Hara (Orson Welles). While knowing that the feelings stirring within him mean trouble, Mike signs on as a crewman on a yacht owned by Elsa's crippled husband, lawyer Arthur Bannister (Everett Sloane). During the voyage, he agrees to help Bannister's partner with an insurance scam that will net him the cash he needs to have Elsa for himself; a scheme that backfires and ends with him being charged with murder, and after he's found guilty at a trial where he is defended by Elsa's husband. A deadly carnival funhouse showdown finally exposes the Bannister's role in the scam ultimately vindicates Mike.

Welles the filmmaker and Welles the actor rarely told a tale that held us as firmly, from start to finish, as this one.

Despite not wanting the job and then fighting some egregious studio hackery, Orson Welles' film noir classic is still visually and emotionally dazzling.

As was usually (always?) the case when Orson Welles was involved with a film, the off-screen stories proved to be as entertaining as the tale placed before the camera.

A mangled masterpiece from a filmmaker who presided over a number of mangled masterpieces.
