“Crater” is the coming-of-age adventure about Caleb Channing, who was raised on a lunar mining colony and is about to be permanently relocated to an idyllic faraway planet following the death of his father. But before leaving, to fulfill his dad’s last wish, he and his three best friends, Dylan, Borney and Marcus, and a new arrival from Earth, Addison, hijack a rover for one final adventure on a journey to explore a mysterious crater.

Crater might not be a good movie, but the really strong elements of it — some of the design, the worldbuilding with the labor disputes surrounding the helium mine, the earnest performances, and the wonderful score — deserve better than this.

The lightness in dealing with critical issues is one of the strengths of this charming film

Heartfelt and insightful at times, the film provides a good balance of well-developed, approachable characters and low-key suspense.

Crater covers some seriously heavy topics, but it often feels like it is fighting against itself to maintain a sense of whimsey despite how bad everything happening is.

The young cast is excellent, and their childish high jinks will entertain younger viewers.
