A wealthy spoiled brat falls off an ocean liner and is rescued by a Portuguese fisherman. Forced to endure a three month voyage, he learns to love the sea and earns his place among the crew. Based on the Rudyard Kipling story, this is a timeless family adventure classic. Oscar-winner Spencer Tracy earned his first Academy Award as the fatherly fisherman. Co-starring child-star Freddie Bartholomew and Oscar-winners Lionel Barrymore Mickey Rooney and Melvyn Douglas. At once the most virile and the tenderest of recent Hollywood photoplays; should rank high on any list of best pictures of all time.

Captains Courageous is such a beautiful and thrilling picture that one hesitates to classify it as a family film for fear people who haven't any families may be alarmed into staying away.

If that's a Portuguese accent Tracy is sporting, then I'm Katharine Hepburn -- if anything, his performance appears to be based on Chico Marx. Nevertheless, this is top-notch entertainment.

An unlikely love story of two opposites splendidly directed by Fleming.
