They brave the most forbidding land in North America: on foot, by kayak, fording rivers, climbing mountains, scaling glaciers. Two teenagers set out to rescue their dad in a race against time and the wilds of Alaska. Moving to an isolated Alaskan seaside village after the death of his wife, urbanite and pilot Jake Barnes (Dirk Benedict) struggles to build a new life for himself with his dreamy 13-year-old daughter, Jessie (Thora Birch), and disenchanted 15-year-old son, Sean (Vincent Kartheiser). But when Jake's plane crashes in a treacherous mountain range, it's up to the kids, along with a polar bear cub, to launch their own unforgettable journey, keeping one step ahead of a ruthless poacher (Charlton Heston).

The vistas are spectacular and some of the suspense is effective, but the story is egregiously dumb, and the polar bear becomes so improbably resourceful that one fully expects it to fly everyone home and then script the sequel.

Alaska is one of those "Don't ask. Don't tell'' movies that persuades us to go along with the innocence and simplicity of it all.
