Academy Award-winning tough guy James Cagney headlines an all-star cast as a Broadway producer forced by the sudden success of film to learn how to make a living in the new medium in choreographer Busby Berkeley's Footlight Parade. As Chester Kent (Cagney) dives head first into producing musical shorts for the cinema, he must contend with his greedy ex-wife Cynthia (Renee Whitney); predatory gold-digger Vivian Rich (Claire Dodd); faithful girl Friday who loves him from afar Nan Prescott (Joan Blondell); would-be star Scotty Blair (Dick Powell), who's living off an older benefactress; his assistant Francis (Frank McHugh), who constantly moans "it will never work"; and secretary Bea Thorn (Ruby Keeler), who finally takes off her glasses and becomes a star.
