World-famous scientist Michael Armstrong (Paul Newman) and his fiancee/assistant, Sarah Sherman (Julie Andrews), travel to Copenhagen for a physics conference. When Sarah mistakenly intercepts a message meant for Armstrong, she believes that he is secretly defecting to East Germany. Or is he? As Armstrong goes undercover to glean top-secret information, the couple find themselves running for their lives from enemy agents in this action-packed thriller.

Coming on the heels of Marnie, ostensibly a film about Hitchcock's own desire to possess and ravage Tippi Hedren, (it) feels especially toothless, as if (he) was somehow exhausted from the film that might have (been) his ultimate cinematic exorcism.

Having seen it now, I realize that it is a dull and rather pathetic political thriller in which Hitchcock predictably fiddles with the clichés of the spy formula without any surprise. Full review in Spanish

It certainly deserves an honourable place among his second-division works, like Strangers on the Train.

Alas, good Hitchcock touches no longer make a good Hitchcock film, and Curtain falls, more redolent of mothballs than mystery.

What looked in its day to be a failure and a disappointment to fans of maestro Alfred Hitchcock now reveals itself to be, if not a key work, then at least the movie that contains one of Hitch's most compelling sequences.
