Art Carney and Lily Tomlin star as an aging, broke private detective and the dizzy client for whose cat the detective is searching in The Late Show. When private detective Ira Wells' (Carney) partner is murdered, Wells reluctantly takes over his partner's open case: locating Margo's (Tomlin) missing cat. And, somehow, the cat's disappearance leads Well's into both the seamy underbelly of Los Angeles and the mystery of his partner's death.

The Late Show is a joke, but not in derision. [Full review in Spanish]

The crowning achievement of the film was the unlikely pairing of Carney and Tomlin, both regarded as comic masters. This changed after Carney’s Oscar-win turn in “Harry & Tonto” and Tomlin’s, non-comic Academy Award-nominated performance in “Nashville.”

Writer-director Benton has fashioned two richly human characters, and the talents of Art Carney and Lily Tomlin take them from there, making both roles not only believable but irresistible as well.

The film's striking originality, as well as its emotional force, stems from the two personalities that stand as an excuse for its mannered plot.
