James Garner, Bruce Lee and Rita Moreno star in a mystery thriller that can only be solved by novelist Raymond Chandler's hard-bitten detective Philip Marlowe. When quiet, Midwesterner Orfamy Quest (Sharon Farrell) hires Marlowe (James Garner) to find her brother, what should be a simple case for the detective quickly becomes a dangerous game of cat and mouse pulling Marlowe into Los Angeles' seamy gangster underworld.

Director Paul Bogart goes for a weird atmospheric mix, keeping Marlowe's crummy, picturesque 1940s-style office intact in the Los Angeles of the 1960s. It is ridiculous when contrasted to the hippie scene, the high rises, the TV production centers.

enjoyable as a period piece, letting us see an older character in a then-modern setting
