Tyler Perry delivers a dynamic performance as Detroit homicide detective/psychologist Dr. Alex Cross, the popular character created by best-selling novelist James Patterson. While tracking down a vicious serial killer (Matthew Fox), Cross nearly meets his match when the case shifts from a high stakes game of cat-and-mouse into a personal mission. Soon, the detective is pushed to the very edge of his moral and psychological limits in this taut, exciting action-thriller.

Critics Consensus: Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox do their best, but they're trampled by Rob Cohen's frustrating direction and a tasteless, lazily written screenplay.

This is an agonizingly unoriginal yarn about another wise detective hunting another ruthless sociopath.

Some ingredients are there for what could’ve been a good movie. But the ingredients themselves don’t equal a fine dish.

"Alex Cross" is a lazy and uninspired attempt. Patterson's readers will tell you, the title character is a ripe and rich literary character with many incredible stories and thrilling stories to tell. He deserves better than this uneven effort.

To be fair to Perry, he's actually not the problem here.

Like watching a caricature of an action movie. You keep waiting for a punch line that never comes.
