...The Bride is a stunningly made and original film that was never likely to capture the public fancy, even with such an exquisitely modish cast

The undoing of the film is the pedestrian back-and-forth between the story-lines, during which it becomes clear that the peregrinations of the monster and the dwarf are very much more interesting than the activities of Frankenstein and Eva.

The film looks good and tries hard for a kind of fairy-tale significance. But the screenplay is generally awful, so any ideas the film might have are suffused in the dreadful afterglow of cinematic ancient and modern.

The Bride might be inspired by Mary Shelley, but its nature seems to draw from Robert Louis Stevenson. Aping the latter's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this feels like two separate movies battling for the upper hand, with the end result basically being a tie.
