While it swings for the fences, it doesn’t quite electrify enough to give the viewer a jolt. They bring her back using the power of streetlights, not lightning, which is the perfect energy comparison here.

Alas, despite scratching at interesting ideas, Gyllenhaal’s chaotic, see-what-sticks approach nullifies most of them, leaving us with an untethered heroine barking slogans that the film around her fails to back up in any creatively meaningful way.

In principle, the Bride is a single individual, in contrast to Frank, who was assembled from bits and pieces of multiple corpses. But as a fictional creation, she never adds up to a cohesive whole, any more than does the movie bearing her name.

Shelley’s "presence" in the narrative is by far its weakest link, and that’s rather pointed in a film that has at least a baker’s dozen worth of narrative threads it keeps failing to weave into a cohesive whole.
