Paul, a penniless painter in Paris, plans to return to the U.S. to his wealthy girlfriend, Laurie, but instead fakes his death to boost his art's value. While Paul secretly paints, his scheming roommate and cohort, Casey, cashes in, romances Laurie, and lands in court for "murder." From drunken debates to outrageous disguises, it's a wild ride when love, art, and lies spark chaos.

The script's few good ideas are soon flogged to death, although it all becomes interestingly tasteless towards the end.

Complications arise when Van Dyke returns and discovers Garner's scam. He is not impressed. Neither will you be.

Nobody demands probability from a farce, but this one keeps its hapless actors so busy explaining what is going on that they have no time to stay for laughs.
