SHIP OF FOOLS is set on a German ocean liner, during the Nazi regime of the 1930's. In the high class section are several well-to-do people, while below deck are a horde of sugar field workers returning to Spain after a season of work in Cuba. The ship is a hot bed of disillusionment, prejudice and delusions of grandeur.

An all-star melodrama in the “Grand Hotel/Airport” model, it’s a slow-moving disaster about a slow-moving disaster.

Each scene in Ship of Fools is interesting enough. What one misses most is a sense of history, that devastation of the thirties and forties toward which the ship of fools and its cargo are steaming.

In the end, I agreed less with the film’s detractors and more with The New York Times’ Bosley Crowther, who called it a “powerful, ironic film [with a] wealth of reflection upon the human condition.”

Despite the aspirations of his title, Mr. Kramer has done little beyond floating Grand Hotel out to sea, with a handful of brilliant performances to keep it above water.

Only flashes of vital acting light a long, pretentious drama.
