A thousand miles of danger, a thousand thrills a mile!Screen heartthrob Errol Flynn and former U.S. President Ronald Reagan star as towering figures of U.S. history and romantic rivals Jeb Stuart and General George Armstrong Custer, both vying for the affection of Kit Carson Holliday (Olivia de Havilland). Meanwhile abolitionist John Brown (Raymond Massey) is waging a war against slavery in Kansas, and when Flynn and Reagan are transferred to the local Army regiment, their involvement in the conflict is imminent -- as a final bloody confrontation between Brown and the Army waits.

It's understandable why Warner Bros. might have seen the onset of the Civil War in Santa Fe Trail as a way to comment on WWII but it only comes off as an epic fail.

Disregarding the film's egregious reframing of history, Santa Fe Trail is one of Curtiz's blandest and most pedestrian films - competently structured but otherwise unremarkable considering the high points of his career.

What really sinks this one is its standing as a racist document only slightly less offensive than D.W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation.
