There are certainly enough good scares for audiences. We just want a little more out of the seasoned vets putting this one together.

“Black Phone 2” is a sequel that lays a solid foundation to continue Finn and Gwen’s story, but gets over complicated when trying to expand its new world.

All in all, Black Phone 2 is a fun time, though it left me missing the original’s tighter scope.

Black Phone 2 is a solid horror sequel that expands the supernatural angles of its universe.

Black Phone 2 is a satisfyingly sweet sequel. Compared to its predecessor, an excess of blood is spilled, which presents a macabre crimson contrast against the film’s frosted setting.

Black Phone 2 feels very derivative of A Nightmare on Elm Street. The standout is Scott Derrickson's direction, which adds to the creepiness of the film.

The first was held up by a hammy killer [...] and this covers him in a mask, makes him sometimes invisible, and weighs everyone down into a frozen lake with devastation porn and odd maxims that would have even sounded off coming from Mr. Freeze.

Black Phone 2, being as funny as it is, was also not on my bingo card. Yet, making it less physiologically punishing for the protagonists and more entertaining for the audience is also why the sequel works as well as it does.

Black Phone 2 blends supernatural scares with a heartfelt message about facing trauma. Stylish dream sequences and strong performances make this a gripping, emotionally resonant sequel.

It’s easy to look past such small gripes after considering the keen vision and first-rate execution of this worthwhile sequel that’s full of proud callbacks and original twists all its own.
