Roland Emmerich (2012, WHITE HOUSE DOWN) directs a classic action/sci-fi thrill ride starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren as soldiers who kill each other in Vietnam but are brought back to life decades later for a secret government program. Known as "Unisols," the genetically enhanced soldiers are now unstoppable killing machines without feelings or free will. But when Deveraux (Van Damme) starts to have flashbacks to his old life, he escapes from the program and sparks a superhuman chase across the country.

Critics Consensus: Universal Soldier unites a pair of veteran action stars behind a potentially intriguing premise, but on this battlefield, entertainment value is largely AWOL.

Both Van Damme and Lundgren are about as interesting as soup cans, so the main appeal of the picture is waiting for these soup cans to puncture or flatten each other in ever more horrific ways.

...an irresistibly broad setup that's employed to expectedly (and appropriately) larger-than-life effect by Emmerich...

Fortunately, the characters all behave seriously, frequently stifling any hint of empathy - but their dialogue and actions scream of silliness.

All brawn, no brains, but grows on you if you can prefer your action in one big, dumb hulking slab of alpha-male aggression.

Cringe-inducing dialogue? Tick. Lots of shit being blown up? Double tick. Flexing of muscles as the stars of the day indulge in a display of cinematic cock-fighting? Triple tick.
