At the close of the Civil War, Wild Bill Hickock reunites with Buffalo Bill Cody, and they discover that gunrunner John Lattimer has supplied rifles to the Cheyenne, enabling them to start a battle at a United States Cavalry outpost. Hickock and Cody attempt to stop the uprising and prevent Lattimer from distributing more weapons.

Sometimes painfully anachronistic, this Western starring Gary Cooper as Wild Bill Hickok still boats plenty of Old Hollywood action and glamor.

Cooper is sexy, charismatic, and cool, but slowly we start to realize the psychological complexity amidst the DeMillian spectacle as he begins to re-examine his murderous tendencies.

The Plainsman is certainly the finest Western since The Virginian: perhaps it is the finest Western in the history of the film.
