Journalist Terry Nichols and his photographer investigate Cora Williams' claim that a long-ago suicide was in fact a murder. They travel to the elderly woman's island mansion with others searching for the truth-or for Cora's hidden fortune. Soon murder and mayhem break out, and a mysterious woman arrives insisting that Cora's spirit lives in her cat, who will expose the murderer among them.

Even if the current talkie version [of The Cat and the Canary] had been handled more skillfully than it has it would still be doubtful whether the midnight episodes in the old mansion could be today anything more than mildly exciting movie material.

[Jean] Hersholt is particularly effective in his brief appearance as the mysterious doctor... Lawrence Grant is splendid as the lawyer.

The creepy thrill value is still there, but in the translation from silent to sound it has been badly slowed up.

A weird mystery drama, filled with thrills and with considerable comedy. It is well acted and well presented and it keeps one in suspense to the very end.

There is no doubt that the "talkie" far surpasses the silent movie in its ability to produce thrills.
