Adapted with a silly, self-referential charm by writer-director Peter Hastings, resulting in a cutely frenetic but narratively somewhat flimsy animated feature.

The rapid-fire silliness of Dog Man would work better in short chunks. By the end, the movie put me in a good mood leaving the theater.

As long as you push way down in the back of your mind how “Dog Man” came to be, this is one of the happiest, strangest, delightful and fun animated movies to come along in a long time.

Crude and irreverent yet also charming and warm-hearted, this adaptation is an unwieldy expansion of material that’s more amusing in smaller doses.

It’s fitting that Dog Man features a robot named 8DHD; this film is ADHD-crazy, and despite the appropriately scratchy and frame-skipping, pleasantly rendered comic-book-style animation, there is nothing to hold anyone’s attention regardless of age
