Five college friends head off to the woods for a weekend of drinking, partying and fooling around. But as they sit at their campfire the first night, a blood-soaked hermit approaches them. He appears to have been infected with a flesh-eating bacterial virus, and as the hapless kids start to catch the bug, paranoia and hostility run rampant.

Critics Consensus: More gory than scary, Cabin Fever is satisfied with paying homage to genre conventions rather than reinventing them.

Reviews

Horror Movie Talk

David Day

What Cabin Fever does really well is tap into people’s innate fear of infection and sickness. The concepts behind this fast moving disease are alarming and are something we are now all intimately familiar with following the pandemic.

A protege of David Lynch, Roth puts a sardonic spin on the puritanism of the 80s slasher...

A divisive moment between opposing tones of horror movies, and a relentless symbol of the director's unfiltered panache for the macabre.

...the somewhat anticlimactic finale ensures that Cabin Fever ends on a woefully forgettable note.

If you take away the shocking makeup-effects work of KNB EFX Inc. there's not much there at all.
