Alternately fatalistic and hopeful, Beatriz at Dinner is a roller coaster of emotional payoff, taking a small and modest offering and exploding what one's expectations might be for a film about people sitting around a dinner table talking.

The problem is that the filmmakers here are so far removed from what is driving the immense social anger and alienation of the population, including the anger and alienation...

The film is deliberately provocative, as if it's daring you to look away. I wouldn't if I were you.

It's a film that looks good, sounds good, has great performances, and does not handhold the viewer through everything going on, every opinion they should form about the characters and their lives.

Beatriz's shock comes neither from the guests' wealth nor their off-color comments, but the cruelty and callous indifference that so often accompanies them.
