Start with a fortune in stolen jewels. Add a dash of danger. A pinch of romance. Season with Hitchcock-like intrigue and comic flair. What do you have? A mystery thriller for the whole family. Set against the sun-bleached beauty of the Isle of Crete, the story pits a young English tourist (Hayley Mills) against a wily Greek jewel thief (Eli Wallach). Mistaken identities and perilous escapes -- including a nail-biting battle with a windmill -- lead the junior-miss detective to a final confrontation aboard the yacht of an eccentric millionairess (Pola Negri) with a passion for priceless gems and pet cheetahs!

Some violence, sexism, stereotypes in '60s Disney adventure.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that The Moon-Spinners is a classic Disney mystery adventure -- with an unmistakably 1960s tone -- based on a suspense novel by Mary Stewart. There is casual sexism throughout, with patronizing dialogue and occasional physical aggression toward women. That said, the lead character Nikky, played by a sparkling Hayley Mills, is a strong female role model -- smart, brave, and loyal, she uses her initiative and shows determination. In addition to the sexism, there are also some examples of stereotyping both in terms of class and how the British and Greek characters are portrayed. While there is no sex or iffy language and only occasional drinking or smoking -- reflecting the social and cultural norms of the 1960s era -- there is a thread of violence running through the action. Characters wield guns, one man is shot with subsequent bloody injury details, and there are fist fights throughout. However, the story is largely a tale of romance and mystery in a beautiful Greek setting.
