Jack Stoneman plans a bright future for his son Will, that includes sending him to college. When Jack is drowned in an icy river, Will’s only hope to see his family through the financial crisis is to enter a grueling sled dog race and win the $10,000 grand prize. Competing with much stronger, trained men, Will sets out on the 522-mile course from Winnipeg, Canada, to St. Paul, Minnesota. Nothing in his imagination could prepare him for the perilous trek, however, and his very survival depends on the strength and courage of his faithful team of dogs. The team is led by his father’s favorite, Gus, and as the marathon tests their strength and stamina, Will and Gus learn to respect and trust each other. Will is sponsored in the race by newspaperman Harry Kingsley, keeping up with the racers by train, whose bulletins make Will an American folk hero. Despite the harsh weather and terrain, and the threat of a dangerous opponent, Borg Guillarson, Will wins the race.

A solid, old-fashioned adventure yarn; nothing special but decent entertainment.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Iron Will is a snowy coming-of-age film that shows the teen hero confronting dangerous obstacles on the way to accomplishing his dream. While the heartwarming theme is excellent, sensitive children should be shielded from this film. In it, Will's father dies and Will is taunted by adults. There's also a graphic dog fight scene. Some mild profanity ("hell," "damn") and smoking and drinking. Kids who are mature enough to handle the content will be rewarded with an excellent film. Parents may want to discuss the film's disturbing elements with younger kids after viewing. It may be hard to get adolescents to watch, but teens who give this story a try will thrill to the youthful main character's courage.
