Michael Courteny stars as an English teenager facing a life as a factory worker that he does not want who turns to petty crime and lands in a reform school. There, the reform school governor (Michael Redgrave) discovers the lad's innate talent for cross country racing, and drafts him onto the team in hopes of winning. But the long races give the young man time for deep introspection in this classic English drama. Screenplay by Alan Sillitoe, based on his short story.
