Saul Indian Horse, an Ojibway boy, is torn from his family and committed to a residential school. At the school, Saul is denied the freedom to speak his language or embrace his heritage and is a witness to abuse by the people sworn to protect him. But Saul finds salvation in the unlikeliest of places - the rink. His incredible hockey talents lead him away from the school to bigger and better opportunities, but no matter how far Saul goes, the ghosts of his past are always close behind.

That this story needs to be told is unquestionable, especially in the hope that broadcasting past shamefulness might prevent future abuse and bias.

Overall the film could use a little more nuance but there is no denying the important and timely nature of the story.

Don't look at the picture of the hockey player on the Netflix menu and figure this is just a feel-good "against all odds" story on skates.

If the Canadian film "Indian Horse" is an index of how aggressive assimilation was brought to bear in the real-life context of the country's indigenous peoples, it leaves no doubt that "aggressive" was the operative word.
