"I always know where I am by the way the road looks..." Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix star in director Gus Van Sant's seminal meditation on the nature of innocence as two young men living on the fringes of society peddle their bodies for sex. Amiable, none-too-bright street hustler Mike Waters (Phoenix) works the streets of the Pacific Northwest with his best friend Scott Favor (Reeves). Mike secretly loves Scott. And Scott, the son of Portland's wealthy mayor, secretly yearns to cast off the friendship of his fellow lowlifes and assume his birthright of wealth, power and respectability.
Rotten Tomatoes® Score
Critics Consensus: A tantalizing glimpse of a talented director and his stars all at the top of their respective games, Gus Van Sant's loose reworking of Henry IV is smart, sad and audacious.

What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that this arty and heartfelt film about street hustlers contains frequent references to and sometimes scenes of gay male prostitution, though genitals are never on screen (aside from a few brief shots of naked female breasts). The hustlers in the film use drugs (cocaine) and alcohol frequently, and they also steal and lie to each other. There is frequent cursing throughout ("f--k").
