When Tennessee farmer Alvin York is drafted, he enters the military as a conscientious objector, refusing to use violence against anyone. Although a born leader and patriot, the deeply religious York goes to the front still believing in nonviolence. But when his unit is overwhelmed by Germans, Sergeant York takes up arms to defend his friends. Single-handed, he stops a German offensive and takes 132 prisoners.

One of the phoniest of all war pictures, exhibiting limited entertainment value, blandly stereotypical personas, a routine construction (and a painfully overlong runtime), and minimal genuineness.

It is an uneven production, and no one was comfortable with the locale. Yet it is a strong picture, and an honest one.

Gary Cooper delivers a marvelous performance as the acclaimed World War 1 hero in Sergeant York but the film is propaganda of the era.

Clearly American wartime propaganda...but Cooper's understated performance grounds the film and delivers some solid emotional moments in a film that desperately needs some tightening.

A genuine American classic.
