In this classic swashbuckler set during the French Revolution, a young nobleman seeking vengeance hides behind the identity of a famous clown known as Scaramouche. When Andre Moreau (Stewart Granger) tries to rescue a lifelong friend, he suffers public humiliation during a fight with the Marquis de Maynes (Mel Ferrer). Forced to hide as a member of a traveling theatrical troupe, Moreau achieves fame on stage as he dedicates his life to becoming a master swordsman--although he does always have time for romance. When the theatrical troupe returns to Paris, the dashing Moreau claims his vengeance on the Marquis during one of the greatest swordfights ever filmed.
