Errol Flynn stars in this classic, swashbuckling, high seas, pirate adventure, as The Sea Hawk. 1580s. Elizabeth I, queen of the upstart island nation of England, commissions buccaneer captain Geoffrey Thorpe (Flynn) to harass the Spanish Armada. At a time when Spain dominates Europe, has conquered most of the Americas and is building the greatest naval fleet the world has ever seen, the fate of the tiny nation depends on daring men such as Thorpe and his mission to halt Spain's global trade. But no one plans on captain Thorpe falling for his hostage, doña Maria (Brenda Marshall), as the love between a pirate and a Spanish lady changes the future of England and the world.

This rip-roaring adventure yarn was made at lavish expense, and, as they say, it all shows up there on the screen.

Despite their relationship with each other, The Sea Hawk is the best collaboration between Michael Curtiz and Errol Flynn.

Checks all the boxes for a seafaring adventure epic.

I don't feel so much emotion with this adventure film by Curtiz, in his tenth collaboration with the mythical Errol Flynn, but I can instantly recognize, despite the lack of dynamism, that it has some interesting characters. [Full review in Spanish]

...as much as Flynn himself, what pulls together the grand action set-pieces of swordplay ... and gushing romance is the music by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. It's Hollywood's greatest swashbuckling symphony and one of the all-time favorite movie scores.
