In 1850, sea captain Jonathan Clark poaches seal pelts off the coast of Russian-owned Alaska. Returning to San Francisco, he meets and falls for countess Marina Selanova, who's fleeing from her engagement to a greedy Russian, Prince Semyon. Their whirlwind romance is tested as rivals, betrayal, and a dangerous race to Alaska pull them into a fight for freedom and survival.

Although it's all but forgotten today, The World in His Arms was one of the films produced by Universal to commemorate the studio's 40th anniversary. It turned out to be a wise investment.

This is no classic, but it's loads of fun, thanks in part to Walsh's brisk pacing and infectious sympathy for rugged, macho types.

Rex Beach's novel of romance and adventure in early-day Alaska comes to the screen as a hearty, salty, action film well-trouped by a good cast headed by Gregory Peck.

It all adds up to exciting and colorful stuff, with no strain on the thinking matter.
