This by-the-numbers biopic is a soggy, second-rate attempt at myth-making that cares more about legacy than about who the man behind the legend really was.

A piecemeal approach is hardly the way to approach a politician who shifted the direction of his party. There’s a lot to unearth here but “Reagan” doesn’t want to be groundbreaking. It settles for stirring a little soil, not moving a lot of dirt.

Reagan captures a bygone era of dignity, class, and conviction in political leadership that feels refreshing.

Reagan harps on the phrase “clarity is power,” and it is clarity as a visual storytelling value more than patriotism or reason that makes this film into the most effective kind of propaganda.

This is not an exploration, but a celebration, and for that reason it's undramatic.
