Meryl Streep (IT'S COMPLICATED, DOUBT, MAMMA MIA!) gives an OSCAR®-winning performance as Margaret Thatcher in this surprising and intimate portrait of the first and only female Prime Minster of the United Kingdom. Smashing through the barriers of gender and class, Thatcher is arguably one of the 20th century's most influential women. THE IRON LADY weaves the intricacies of Thatcher's personal life with her policy decisions, focusing on the price that she paid for power.

Critics Consensus: Meryl Streep's performance as The Iron Lady is reliably perfect, but it's mired in bland, self-important storytelling.

Reviews

Every Movie Has a Lesson

Don Shanahan

While the film is respectful of her past achievements, we can't help but want more of the "Iron Lady" of the past, not the Rusty Woman in the present.

With a short runtime of under two hours, it takes too long for the screenplay to get to the meat of the political situation as the story instead favors an almost sympathetic set-up for a character that many find hard to love.

Yet even in the film’s hokiest moments Streep’s work is impressive, as is the sheer nerve she displays just by taking on the role.

A disappointment—a missed opportunity for one of those great, complex, informative biopics that are becoming rarer all the time.

Battleship Pretension

Is The Iron Lady better than the average biopic? I'd say so. It has a good look, a great performance, and the occasional strong, probing scene. But, by and large, I found myself wanting more.
