From Blumhouse (Insidious and The Purge franchises, Get Out) comes a chilling tale of childhood and repressed memories of the past. After Jessica (DeWanda Wise) moves back in to her childhood home in Louisiana with her family, the reappearance of an imaginary friend from her youth sets in motion a threatening scavenger hunt with Jessica's stepdaughter, Alice (Pyper Braun). As Jessica's memories begin to surface - aided by cryptic stories from an elderly neighbor (Betty Buckley) about a portal to the spirit world- she realizes the imaginary friend she left behind is very real…and very unhappy she left.

It’s almost like the writers knew what they wanted to tell the audience but had no idea how to convey their thoughts other than having the characters say them outright.

It is a successful horror film that takes a well-known premise to offer us a deeper, entertaining story, full of tension and narrative twists, with a good cast to accompany it. [Full Review in Spanish]

Imagine a better movie. It’s not hard.

For a film about imagination, the new BlumHouse horror mystery lacks any real ingenuity. While presenting a creative concept, the barely nightmarish dull thriller deserved a much better execution.

Look beyond the plethora of allusions, and you’ll see a film that’s happily engaging with the genre while still maintaining a solid core of real dread so that it’s not all empty calories.
