It’s a little overlong, and laden with some really dumb gags and gross-out effects. But there’s something moving about Smith’s grappling with the contradictions of a religion and tradition he clearly loves.

Dogma has all the raunchy humor you'd expect from a Kevin Smith movie, but it's also a thoughtful satire of the institutions that warp people's faith.

While Smith airs his grievances with the Catholic church and the Good Book itself through his usual vernacular of curse words and pop culture references, Dogma is ultimately an affirmation of faith and the hope for a greater good watching out for us all.

The comedy has aged like a bowl of hot and expired #MeToo molasses, but the film has an immensely talented cast and superbly written dialogue. If you have a Mount Rushmore of Kevin Smith films, Dogma chisels itself as the Holy Grail of religious comedies.

The movie is a failure, but an honest one.
