This is a goth horror movie that is reminiscent of Hammer and other old timey studios, it’s goth horror that knows how to build a few scares, but mainly how to build attachments to the characters to make you feel their plight.

Crimson Peak doesn't entirely land its horror or romance elements, but the costume and production design, plus Jessica Chastain's villainous turn, are utterly sumptuous.

Sumptuously detailed and ornamented, Crimson Peak lays the foundation for a macabre romance of intricate costumes, set pieces, and special effects in the tradition of classical gothic style.
