Full of ugly personalities and dirty imagery, it's a return to the glory days of unpretentious action thrillers that did what they set out to do, and nothing more.

A film about redemption made all the more poignant and relevant because it draws on our own sense of betrayal and anger towards Gibson and challenges us to either forgive or dismiss.

There are moments of wild-eyed over-acting, as we've come to expect of old Mel down the years, but they don't seem out of place in a film that seems to have its tongue firmly in its cheek.
