Not since Spielberg’s West Side Story has a movie musical felt so alive, with Chu embodying the same love for the craft that the likes of Stanley Dolan and Robert Wise once had, and it shows in every frame of his colourful and wonderful vision of Oz.

Wicked hits mostly high notes in a dazzling theatrical adaptation sure to delight fans of the Broadway show and newcomers alike. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have fantastic chemistry while belting out soaring vocals in eye-popping musical numbers.

Visually stunning with lively music numbers and an Oscar-worthy performance by Cynthia Erivo, but it's overlong and meandering while suffering from excessive style over substance. Ariana Grande is miscast.
