In this tense thriller, a woman with a secret past returns to the wilds of her youth to face the most dangerous man she's ever met: her father. Helena's (Daisy Ridley) seemingly ordinary life hides a dangerous truth: her estranged father is the infamous Marsh King (Ben Mendelsohn), the man who kept her and her mother captive in the wilderness for years. When he escapes from prison, Helena is forced to confront her past, and – knowing that he will hunt for her – find the strength to outmaneuver the man who taught her everything she knows about surviving in the wild.

It's mildly enthralling, I mean there is a lot that works, but unfortunately the filmmakers couldn't quite nail the ending, which is too bad.

Ridley delivers her strongest post-Star Wars turn with a deeply empathetic character who is, throughout the drama, on the cusp of a breakdown, or a breakthrough. It’s powerful work.

A strange misfire.
